Wastelands

About the Film
Wastelands is a ten-part series about a family whose life is turned upside down. A series where each episode has its own theme, but we also continuously follow the family line of the central characters. The main characters are addiction specialist Hana Velková (Aňa Geislerová), her husband, the headmaster of a grammar school, Karel Velek (Stanislav Majer), and her brother, a criminal investigator, Jiří Kolář (Matouš Ruml). All three try to help children and adults who find themselves in difficult life situations. All three are competent and dedicated to their work, and all three have their own truth. They deal with cases that cannot be postponed, but their professional roles and natures regularly put them against each other. In addition to their profession, they must also succeed in their parental roles, and this test proves to be the most difficult. Conflicts related to problems at school or with drugs, social exclusion, and cultural wars take place against the backdrop of a medium-sized, prosperous town; a familiar world with clear boundaries, where everyone knows everyone else, and where it is therefore difficult to solve anything without it becoming a public topic that everyone discusses. It is a pleasant place to live, but also a world intertwined with complex relationships, where only some things are said out loud. A world that also has its dark corners. Stories inspired by real criminal and social cases show what we don’t know about our children. (Czech Television)
